What Is a Slot?

slot

A slot is an area in the wing of an aircraft that can be used for high-lift or control devices. It is a type of notch or cut in the wing surface and is usually placed near the leading edge or trailing edge. A slot can also refer to a specific position within an organization or hierarchy.

A nickel back or slot corner in football is a player that can cover multiple routes on the route tree, and is often smaller in size than a traditional boundary cornerback. These players are becoming more important in modern NFL offenses, as they allow teams to stretch the defense vertically off of pure speed, and are particularly effective at running short route combinations such as slants or quick outs.

The slot> element is part of the Web Components technology suite and provides a container for dynamic content on a page. A slot is a placeholder that either waits for content to be added (a passive slot) or actively calls out to a renderer to fill it with content (an active slot). A slot> can have a name attribute, which can be used to distinguish between different slots on a single page. See the article Using Slots to Manage Dynamic Content for more information.
